API Timed Out but Saved the Booking? Check Before Retrying

A timeout does not tell you whether a booking saved. Find the result before retrying so a missing reply does not turn into a second appointment.

Your app says the booking failed, but the clinic diary shows it. The server may have saved the appointment before the reply was lost. A timeout means your app stopped waiting. It does not prove the save failed. Repeating the request as a new booking can make the problem worse, so first find out what happened to the original request.

Things to check first

  1. Look in the booking system for the original request's result. Use its saved appointment ID or a supported unique reference. A person and time alone may match another genuine visit.
  2. Compare the sender's error time with the server or workflow log. Find whether the wait ended before the booking step, during it or after it. Remove keys and personal details before sharing logs.
  3. Check automatic retries in every layer: the app, workflow tool, queue and vendor. Do not click Retry repeatedly while another layer may already be trying again.

Postman official guide explaining how mock servers simulate API replies

A mock helps test how your app reacts to a delay or error. It cannot prove a real booking saved. This is Postman’s mock-server documentation; the test also needs a controlled destination check.

What to ask the freelancer to do

  • Trace the save and missing response
  • Add a safe way to check an unclear result
  • Test failures before and after saving
  • Document pending requests and recovery

Questions to ask before hiring

  • How will you prove whether the first request saved?
  • Does this API support a stable request key or lookup?
  • What should staff do when the result stays unclear?

Red flags

  • Sends a fresh create request after every timeout
  • Calls a timeout proof that nothing saved
  • Only tests a slow response before the save starts

Agree what the job includes

  1. Give each business request a stable reference before sending it. Save the returned appointment ID when available. Agree how the app looks up an unclear result and what staff see while that check runs.
  2. Check the API's repeat-request support. Stripe documents idempotency keys for supported requests, but that does not mean a clinic API accepts the same header. If the vendor has no equivalent, the developer must explain the limits of any lookup or local tracking method.
  3. Test a lost reply after the destination has saved. Also test a failure before saving and a worker restart before it records the result. These are different cases. Increasing the timeout may reduce waiting errors, but it does not solve an unknown result.

What to send the freelancer

  • Share the request route, redacted error and known appointment IDs. State whether the customer saw a failure, a confirmation or nothing.
  • List every place that retries and the current wait limits. Confirm whether the vendor supports finding a booking by an external reference.
  • Agree safe test records, blocked outgoing reminders and who checks the diary when the result cannot be proved.

How to check the work is done

  • A test that saves the appointment but loses the reply ends with one appointment and a confirmed result, or a visible review task. It does not blindly create another appointment.
  • A request that failed before saving can recover. Tests also cover an unavailable lookup and a restarted worker.
  • The handover explains the pending state, retry rules and what staff should check before making a manual booking.

What may cost extra

  • Changing the vendor's response time or guaranteeing every network request succeeds is outside the repair.
  • Cleaning up past duplicates and adding a full booking dashboard are separate tasks.

Common questions

Should I raise the API timeout?

It may help if a valid response is just slow, within the vendor's limits. You still need a plan for a lost response, because a longer wait cannot guarantee the reply arrives.

Can an API show an error after it creates a record?

Yes. The response can be lost after the server saves, or a later step can fail. Check the destination and request history before repeating a create action.

Node.js API timeout investigation

This listing covers Node.js API bug fixes and database integrations. Ask for an investigation of saved bookings with missing replies, including safe recovery. A new integration is a different package.

The listing showed 112 reviews when checked. Reviews cover a range of jobs; they do not prove experience with your clinic software.

Before you hire: Ask how an unclear save will be checked before retrying and request a test that loses the reply after saving.
