How to Set Up Stripe Webhooks Without Duplicate Actions
Plan a Stripe webhook that checks genuine events, updates the right record and handles retries without sending the same order twice.
A webhook is an update one service sends to another. Stripe can send one when a payment or subscription changes. Your app then decides what to do, such as mark an invoice paid or start order handling. The same event can arrive again, so “we received it” and “we acted on it” need separate checks. A sound build handles those repeats and verifies that an event really came from Stripe before granting access or shipping an order.
Things to check first
- Write down the Stripe event and business action you need. A paid invoice, a completed checkout and a subscription change are not interchangeable events.
- Check whether an existing, supported app connection already handles the job. A custom webhook adds code, hosting and maintenance responsibilities.
- Choose a Stripe test setup and made-up destination records. Keep test and live endpoint secrets separate, and never paste them into a job brief.

An API request example in Postman. This is not proof of a Stripe event: a real Stripe webhook must be checked with Stripe’s signature process before it changes orders or access.

- Choose the required Stripe events
- Verify event signatures
- Prevent repeated business actions
- Test failures and provide recovery notes
Questions to ask before hiring
- How do you know the event came from Stripe?
- What if this event arrives twice or late?
- How can we tell delivery succeeded but the business action failed?
Red flags
- Trusts any request claiming to be Stripe
- Disables signature checks to clear an error
- Uses a success-page visit as proof of payment
Agree what the job includes
- Agree the event types and the exact record each should update. Do not subscribe to every event simply because it is possible.
- Require Stripe signature verification and a record of events already handled. The developer should explain how repeated or out-of-order updates avoid an incorrect business action.
- Plan what happens if the app is temporarily unavailable or accepts an event but later work fails. An HTTP success response is not proof that the order or account was updated.
What to send the freelancer
- Supply the app framework, hosting service and desired event-to-action rules. Share redacted event examples through an agreed private channel.
- Use scoped developer access and secret storage. The endpoint secret belongs in the server setup, not public code or screenshots.
- Agree who watches failed deliveries, how recovery is approved and how a new version is tested before going live.
How to check the work is done
- A genuine test event produces the agreed record change. A request with an invalid signature is rejected without granting access or triggering order handling.
- Sending the same event again does not repeat the business action. Tests also cover a temporary failure and the agreed event-order case.
- You receive the endpoint code, event rules, secret-configuration instructions and steps for checking and recovering failures.
What may cost extra
- This does not provide payment-provider approval, dispute handling or accounting advice.
- A full billing system, subscription migration or rebuilding an existing app needs separate scope.

Common questions
Is a Stripe webhook the same as a customer visiting the success page?
No. A browser return and a server event are different signals. Agree the right Stripe event and verified payment state before granting access or fulfilling an order.
Why must the same Stripe event be tested twice?
Stripe events can be delivered more than once. The receiver needs a safe way to recognise work it has already done so a retry does not repeat an important business action.
